The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Coordinating Group has called on India to immediately stop the security operation against the people of Jammu and Kashmir, respect the basic human rights of the people living there, Refrain from changing the demographic structure and resolve the dispute peacefully under the relevant UN resolutions.
According to a statement issued by the OIC, an emergency virtual meeting of the Contact Group was held (Monday) in which the Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, Niger and Azerbaijan participated.
The meeting was chaired by OIC Secretary General Dr. Youssef Al Othiman.
“I urge the international community to intensify its efforts to achieve the rights of the people of Kashmir that have not been granted to them for decades.
The Contact Group, vowing to continue supporting the people of Kashmir, called on the UN Secretary-General to urge India to abide by UN Security Council resolutions and to discuss the issue. Find a peaceful solution through
On the other hand, the Coordinating Group highly appreciated the efforts made by the OIC General Secretariat through its Special Envoy to visit Jammu and Kashmir in March 2020.
According to Pakistan’s state-run news agency APP, addressing a meeting of the liaison group, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the situation in Indian-administered Kashmir has worsened and human rights violations have been organized. The trend continues today, while threats to peace and security in the region have increased.
He urged the OIC to urge India to repeal the illegal and unilateral measures taken on August 5, 2019, following UN Security Council resolutions and holding a referendum on Kashmir under the auspices of the United Nations. Give the right to vote and immediately stop serious human rights violations.
The meeting was held at the request of Pakistan
OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousuf Al-Uthaymeen said, “This meeting is a link in the chain of meetings of the Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Group. Many issues related to Jammu and Kashmir will be discussed in it.
Last year, when India lifted the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan put pressure on the OIC to issue a strong statement against India. However, this did not happen and the OIC remained almost neutral.
In fact, the OIC is considered an organization dominated by Saudi Arabia. It is impossible to do anything in the OIC without the support of Saudi Arabia.
The role of Saudi Arabia
India and Saudi Arabia have broader common interests and Saudi Arabia has refrained from speaking out against India over Kashmir. Saudi Arabia had not issued any statement against India even after the end of the special status given to Kashmir by India.
The United Arab Emirates, a major Gulf state, even said it was an internal matter of India. This stance of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates was seen as a shock to Pakistan and a diplomatic achievement for India.
But once again, Pakistan will link the OIC’s holding of such a meeting to its success. Earlier, such a meeting was held in September last year.
Regarding the OIC’s neutrality on the Kashmir issue, Pakistan had sought grouping with Turkey, Malaysia and Iran. For this, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, then Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad and Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan had planned to form an alliance at the Kuala Lumpur Summit.
But Saudi Arabia saw it as a challenge to the OIC.
However, Turkey and Malaysia have been seen standing with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue while the rest of the Islamic countries have generally remained neutral. In recent days, OIC member Maldives has supported India.
The OIC meeting is being held at a time when tensions are running high between India and China, the world’s second largest economy. Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in a clash between the two countries in the border region of Ladakh.
On the other hand, a new dispute has arisen for India on the border with Nepal and India’s relationship with Pakistan is already strained. In such a situation, the OIC meeting is considered very important.
Saudi Arabia is also part of the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir.
Iran, Malaysia and Turkey have long complained that the OIC has failed to meet the needs and ambitions of Islamic countries. Iran, Turkey and Malaysia are trying to form an organization free from Saudi domination.
In view of this, a summit was organized in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but Pakistan did not attend.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia at the time denied reports based on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s claim that Pakistan did not attend the Kuala Lumpur summit under alleged Saudi pressure.
In this regard, there has been criticism within Pakistan that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are Islamic countries but they are with India on the Kashmir issue. However, it is a fact that India has a larger Muslim population than Pakistan. The OIC liaison group on Jammu and Kashmir also includes Turkey and Pakistan who can speak out against India.
