Police have registered a case and arrested 12 suspects in connection with the rape and robbery of a woman near a motorway in Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab.
The incident took place between Tuesday and Wednesday night when two men allegedly grabbed a woman in a car parked on the side of the road waiting for help and raped her in front of children in a nearby field.
After the case was registered on Wednesday evening, the matter was discussed on Pakistani media and social media and the performance of the police continued to be criticized.
Inam Ghani, who took over as Punjab Inspector General of Police a day before the incident, said that since the initial investigation, 12 suspects have been arrested so far.
According to Inam Ghani, the police investigation team has found evidence that will help us reach the accused. At the same time, the woman herself has revealed some of the identities of the accused. Geo-fencing of the site and area has also been done and we have even reached the village where the accused belong. Our only goal at the moment is to arrest the culprits as soon as possible so that the mental condition of the woman and her children can be improved.
Earlier, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs Shahbaz Gul said in a tweet that the administration was busy tracing the culprits with the help of various methods of interrogation and the CCPO Lahore itself was leading the investigation team.
Punjab Chief Minister Usman Bazdar has taken notice of the incident and demanded a report from IG Police Punjab.
According to the FIR, the incident took place around 3 am and a relative of the victim lodged a case at Gujjarpura police station at 10 am on Wednesday.
On the other hand, the Motorway Police has clarified that the place where the woman was raped is not within the purview of the Motorway Police. According to the spokesperson, Ring Road Motorway is not within the jurisdiction of the police.
