US President Donald Trump has said he can ban tick talk from August 1. Censorship and security concerns over the Chinese video application TikTok led to the decision.
Trump added that he would implement the decision by issuing a presidential decree. He said the ban on the Chinese app could be signed on August 5.
Tiktok is very popular among young people all over the world because of its easy-to-use and funny or weird videos.
The number of TikTok users in the United States alone is over ten million, while globally it is in the millions. There are considerable concerns about censorship and security due to the Chinese ownership of TikTok.
Critics fear that videos critical of China could be removed and that Chinese authorities could gain access to the platform’s user data. On the other hand, the management of TikTok has repeatedly said that critical videos regarding China are not removed and no user data is provided to the Chinese government.
The decision by US President Donald Trump to ban tiktok comes at a time when there are rumors circulating in the US media that some US companies are interested in buying the company. The New York Times and Fox Business published reports on Sunday that the US company is interested in buying Microsoft TikTok and talks are underway.
